Polar Express Packages

The Polar Express is a magical journey to the North Pole, a real-life rendition of the children's book, The Polar Express ©, written by Chris Van Allsburg and published by the Houghton Mifflin Company. This truly unique adventure takes place each December in North Conway the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, with an evening train full of children and adults, dressed in their pajamas, plus a bunch of elves, and of course, Santa himself! Our local locomotive train, the Conway Scenic Railroad, assists in making this book come to life, with the hissing steam and squeaking metal taking its anxious passengers to the North Pole. On the way to the North Pole, kids get cocoa "as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars" and "candy with nougat centers as white as snow." At the North Pole, dozens of elves are waiting.
Tickets to this special holiday event are highly sought and consistently sold out, and we are happy to have some available to guests of Riverside Inn.

Once we have our Polar Express Tickets,
we will post our packages on this page...

Our Polar Express Packages include lodging and breakfast, plus a ticket for one performance for each person.

North Conway Polar Express

The entire community here has embraced this favorite holiday event and hundreds of local people have volunteered to assist with the Polar Express over the years. The Polar Express Event is one of the major fundraisers for the "Believe in Books" Literacy Foundation. This event is greatly enhanced and brought to life with the collective efforts of many volunteers, all dressed in appropriate outfits, along with an extremely dedicated staff. Together they all help our guests to truly believe.

Some Polar Express Tips

There are two performances each day of Polar Express from the Conway Scenic Railroad station in the center of North Conway Village. The afternoon train begins boarding at 4:30pm, with departure at 5:00pm, the evening train begins boarding at 7:00pm, and departs for the North Pole promptly at 7:30pm. Make sure you get there at least half an hour early. The entire performance lasts around two and a half hours so if you have little ones you may want to go on the earlier performance.

For the performance EVERYONE (Parents included!!) wears some type of pajamas. I suggest you wear long underwear or some type of warm clothing under your pajamas, along with winter boots and a jacket.

One of the reasons you want to get to the train early is parking is limited and it may take you a few minutes to get your spot. One of our suggestions is to go park at a local restaurant and either have dinner before or after the performance.

You'll go through the historic train station to the Polar Express train behind it. You will be greeted by the elf conductors and chefs as you get onto the train. As the train starts out of town and into the forest be on the lookout for wolves (not real ones)! After about a twenty minute train ride you will arrive at the North Pole!! A sea of elves will be waiting for for outside of the train with lighted lanterns to take you up the hill to Santa's workshop. Each elf has his/her own name, age and history, so feel free to encourage your kids to ask the elves questions (You can also take them aside and ask them to mention a past Christmas gift, and that they made it for them! Or anything to tie Christmas in and make it more real for them).

I'm not going to tell you what happens next as it is very special and should be a surprise. Afterwards, the elves escort you back down the hill to the train. On the ride home the Elf Chefs will serve you hot chocolate, cookies or chocolates, and give you the special Polar Express Bells as you sing Christmas carols on the way home. It is truly a memorable event, for all.
